New to town
by millimillerson, over 2 years agoMy husband and I moved to Oregon when we retired to be near our son and daughter-in-law. We arrived in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic.I was searching for a way to meet women in a low pressure, casual setting. The Sandy Women’s book club was meeting monthly via ZOOM at that time so I gave it a shot. It was the best thing I could have done. The Sandy Women’s book club was meeting monthly via ZOOM at that time so I gave it a shot. It was the best thing I could have done. Meeting once a month to discuss a book we have all read is something I still look forward to 3 years later. Now we meet at the library but still offer ZOOM for those who can’t make it in.We are a great group of easy going people who enjoy each other and always welcome a newcomer. Our age range is from 20’s to 80’s and everyone’s opinion is welcomed.
My husband also enjoys the library and checks out books or downloads one to his iPad. He reads every day now.
I am so thankful to the Sandy Library for providing these opportunities for us. The library should be your first stop when you move to a new town! -

Library 4 All
by tenaciousd, about 3 years agoAs a kid who grew up in the 80s whose parents avoided buying overpriced items at the Scholastic Book Fair at school, I learned to appreciate libraries at a young age. As a 13 year resident of Sandy who uses the library rather frequently, I must say I have been overjoyed at the services our library offers. I love our local library!

They have a really excellent selection of books which is obviously well curated. They have a wonderful array of graphic novels, and it's not limited to the big name titles: they have lots of great things you might not expect. We have the ability to get books directly from the library itself or have them shipped from other local libraries within our linked library system to our home branch. I just pick up and drop off without having to use multiple libraries like I did as a kid. There are a wide variety of audiobooks I can listen to as either mp3, streamed, or on CD available for me to listen to while working in the garage. I recently jumped at getting some remastered Led Zeppelin music to give my sweet hifi system a workout. The entire band discography was available for pick up in just 3 days. Similarly, their DVD/Bluray selection is superb, and they have lots of domestic films which is really nice as I miss the old days of browsing video stores on Friday nights. My kids and I checked out a bunch of classic 80’s horror movies for a scary slumber party. It was such a treat and felt so good to do that again! Our local library has a seed library that lets you take to donated seeds to plant. They even have video games! I recently played on a SNES system while my kids played some new Switch games for free. Not to mention there are many family events offered: everything from story time for children, Lego builds, book clubs, to holiday themed gatherings.
Our city library offers a service called a Library of Things. The Library of Things is one of the coolest ideas I’ve ever seen. I have borrowed dozen of useful household items like a pressure washer, radon detector, air fryer, knife sharpener, a photo scanner, rock tumbler, food dehydrator, board games, a metal detector, and a VHS to DVD converter. Just borrowing those items alone has saved me hundreds of dollars and lot better than buying that stuff to use it twice before it spends 10 years collecting dust in a corner of the garage.
I was disheartened to see one of the comments below. I am not sure how someone who has lived here since 1979 and has never even been into the library can reasonably comment on it having no purpose and being a waste. Just for context, 1979 is 44 years ago and pre space shuttle, personal computers, and camcorders. It should be noted that many of the benefits listed above literally did not even exist the last time that commenter was even in our library. As some who used library services way back then and even more so now, I completely and emphatically disagree! Our local Sandy library has been worth every penny I pay in taxes and I experience the benefits of those services on a weekly basis.
At a time where people's money goes less far it's so nice to see this kind of thing. Honestly it's just nice to visit a space and use a service which doesn't exist solely to make a profit and that isn’t trying to sell you something. That might sound silly, but it's really something rare that I appreciate immensely. Our local library is a real community service that is worth protecting and supporting.

Access to the world
by CaptainHook503, over 3 years agoAccess to the library granted me access to the entire world. As a person who was raised as a Jehovah's Witness and was gay, I was restricted on everything I can do. Me going to the library as a teenager allowed me learn that I was an okay person and was a safe space to explore stories about other gay men and the LGBTQ+ community.I also was able to utilize the library even to this day, as my personal passport to the entire world! Encouraging my creativity
by MelissaMelissa, over 3 years agoThe sandy library has encouraged development and strengthened my creativity over the years. To the month painting classes (please restart them) and art supply swaps prior to the pandemic. To month craft kits during the pandemic and the kits that continue to this day. Because It’s Ours
by Patience, over 3 years agoI grew up going to libraries and look forward to taking my children to them for the many books, items like games and craft kits they can check out, story time activities, and other options that connect kids with each other outside of school.

I’ve bought and donated books to the on-site bookstore, checked out free audiobooks for long drives, printed documents via their mobile app etc. After I had my daughter and needed a quiet place to go by myself sometimes, the Sandy Public Library was the perfect place to sit and read some art books that gave me peace amid chaos. There are always people there of all ages. The library is such an important part of the community and people can even work with the librarians to propose new groups or programming. It’s our library and it reflects us and serves us because we show up for it as much as it shows up for Sandy.

Why
by S ATTERBERRY , almost 4 years agoThe library has an operating biannual budget of 3.4 million dollars. Compare that to the police budget of 7.7 million dollars. The library does nothing to help the community or make it any safer. As someone who has lived in Sandy since 1979 I or no one I know has ever used the library or been in it. The community could do so much more with 1.7 million dollars a years. At that cost and for no benefit to the community it is an absolute waste of money. With 11320 in Sandy that means everyone would be paying 150 dollars... Continue readingThe library has an operating biannual budget of 3.4 million dollars. The library no longer serves any purpose and is a waste of tax dollars with no benefit to the community. What I love about the library would that it go away! -

10 books each
about 4 years agoAs a kid, I remember going to the library weekly with my mom and older sister. After having trouble keeping track of our library books once, and getting too many overdue fines, my mom instituted a rule. We could each check out 10 books. About half-way through the week, we would each begin to run out of books to read. Though my sister was 5 years older than me, we started reading each other's books. This is likely why I needed a bookmark in the 2nd grade.
